FOR EBAY SELLERS

See your real eBay profit, after final value fees, postage and cost of goods

eBay shows you what sold. TunedBooks shows you what you earned. Per item. Per day. Automatically.

TunedBooks calculates your net profit on every eBay sale by subtracting the cost of goods, eBay's final value fee (typically 12.8% + 30p), postage, and packaging from your selling price. The dashboard shows your real margin per item and your running profit by day, week and month. Free to start, 20 transactions per month, no card required.

Where your eBay revenue actually goes

eBay's fee structure is layered. There is the final value fee (percentage of total sale including postage), the per-order fee (30p), optional promoted listing fees (2–20% of sale price), and PayPal or managed payments processing on top. For most sellers, total platform costs run 15–20% of the selling price before you have counted postage, packaging, or the cost of the item itself.

Real profit on a £25 eBay sale

Selling price£25.00
eBay final value fee (12.8%)−£3.20
Per-order fee−£0.30
Cost of goods−£8.00
Postage (Royal Mail tracked 48)−£3.99
Packaging−£0.45
Net profit£9.06

£25 came in. £9.06 was earned. That is a 36% net margin. Without tracking every line, you would assume the profit was much higher, and you would price future items too aggressively, or keep selling items that actually lose money.

HMRC, DAC7, and why records matter now

Since January 2024, eBay reports UK seller data to HMRC under the DAC7 directive if you make more than 30 sales or earn more than €2,000 (roughly £1,700) in a calendar year. HMRC now knows how much you sold. The question is whether you have records showing how much you spent, because without those records, HMRC taxes the full revenue.

Good records protect you. Every cost price logged, every postage receipt recorded, every packaging expense tracked, these reduce your taxable profit to its real level. TunedBooks creates this record as you sell, not three months later from memory.

You also get a £1,000 trading allowance. If your total eBay income is under £1,000 in a tax year, you do not need to report it. But tracking it in TunedBooks tells you exactly when you are approaching that threshold, so you are not surprised when you cross it.

Note: TunedBooks is a bookkeeping app. It does not file tax returns or submit data to HMRC. Use HMRC-recognised software or an accountant for your actual filing.

HMRC already knows what you sold. Make sure you know what you earned.

Multi-platform selling

If you sell on eBay and also list on Vinted, Etsy, or your own Shopify store, TunedBooks tracks all of them. Tag each sale by channel. The dashboard shows profit per channel, so you can see where you make the most money and where fees are eating your margin.

A vintage lamp that nets £12 on eBay after fees might net £15 on Etsy where fees are lower but the audience is different. Or it might net £18 on your own Shopify store where you pay no marketplace fees at all. Without per-channel tracking, you are guessing.

Built for sellers, not accountants

No accounting jargon. No chart of accounts. Record a sale in under ten seconds, item, selling price, channel. TunedBooks already knows the cost price from your inventory. It does the maths and updates your profit dashboard in real time.

Works offline. Record sales at a car boot, log sourcing costs at the wholesaler, check your weekly profit on the train home. Everything syncs when you reconnect.

eBay shows you what sold. TunedBooks shows you what you earned.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my real profit on eBay sales?

Subtract cost of goods, eBay final value fee (typically 12.8% plus 30p), postage costs, and packaging from your selling price. TunedBooks does this calculation automatically for every sale and shows your net profit per item on the dashboard.

What fees does eBay charge UK sellers?

eBay UK charges a final value fee of around 12.8% of the total sale amount (including postage) plus 30p per order for most categories. Some categories have different rates. There may also be optional promoted listing fees. TunedBooks lets you record all of these as expenses so your profit number is accurate.

Do I need to keep records of eBay sales for HMRC?

Yes, if you sell regularly for profit. HMRC requires records of sales, costs, and expenses. Since January 2024, eBay also reports seller data to HMRC under DAC7 rules if you exceed 30 sales or £1,700 in a year. TunedBooks keeps a complete record of every sale as you go.

What is the best bookkeeping app for eBay sellers?

TunedBooks is designed for small sellers who need profit tracking without accounting complexity. It records sales with cost price, calculates net profit after fees, tracks expenses, and works offline on iOS and Android. Free to start with 20 transactions per month.

Can I track eBay and other marketplace sales in one app?

Yes. TunedBooks lets you tag sales by channel, eBay, Vinted, Etsy, Shopify, physical shop. The dashboard breaks down profit by channel so you can see which platform gives you the best margin on each product type.
